Around 15 years ago, a friend of mine showed me several beautiful knives with handles made of elk antler, desert ironwood and nickel silver.  I have long admired my brother’s sizable collection of handmade knives, but nothing he had even came close to the look and feel of those knives etched with “R. J. Knives Montana”. From the internet, I learned that they were made by Bob Jolley and his son Josh in Livingston, Montana. Having made a dozen trips to fish the spring creeks in Paradise Valley, just to the south of Livingston, I decided that I would try to meet Bob and Josh on my next trip out.  Over the years, I have enjoyed several meals with the two of them and Josh’s wife Michelle and I have even taken Josh to fish my favorite trout lake several times. I’ve spent countless hours on the phone with Josh picking his brain about handle materials and new types of steel. So far, I have commissioned Josh to build 25 knives for me, I have bought 3 more from other collectors and I have friends that have ordered an additional 6 knives after seeing my collection. I would describe Josh as a “Grand Master Craftsman” and my knives as “samples of perfection”. As proud as I am of my knives, I’m just as proud to call the Jolley’s my friends!
